Using radar altimetry to monitor sea-level rise
Today’s Video of the Day from the European Space Agency features an interview with Dr. Marcello Passaro from the Technical University of Munich, who describes radar altimetry.
Dr. Passaro says that the process is actually quite simple. Satellite altimetry uses a radar pulse, which heats the surface of the ocean and then returns to the satellite. By measuring the time it takes for the pulse to make the trip back, scientists can calculate the height of the sea surface.
This technique is very important for monitoring sea level change and sea level rise.
